Impact Tolerances That Survive Scrutiny

Tolerances written to please a slide deck rarely match how customers experience outages. Here is how fintech teams set numbers they can defend.

Impact tolerances fail when they are invented in isolation from customer journeys. A payment platform that claims a four-hour tolerance for settlement while merchants experience same-day cash-flow stress will not hold under challenge.

Start with the customer harm you refuse to accept: missed salary disbursements, blocked card authorisations, or frozen onboarding for regulated customers. Translate those harms into time and volume thresholds that operations can measure.

Then pressure-test the numbers against dependencies. If a core processor’s contractual recovery sits beyond your tolerance, either renegotiate, build a workaround, or revise the tolerance honestly.

Document assumptions beside the metric. Scrutiny softens when boards can see what the number includes, excludes, and depends on.
